Using control theory, and embedded technologies to automate a physical system

Bit of a mouthful but simply put, I used IOT devices to monitor and control an aquaponics system. It might have turned into an obsession 😳

What is aquaponics?

Aquaponics is the cultivation of fish and plants together in a constructed, recirculating ecosystem utilizing natural bacteria cycles to convert fish waste to plant nutrients.

It is (mostly) a closed loop system that is incredibly eco-friendly. Once the system is stabalised, the plants remove the nitrogen from the system (preventing toxicity) and so the only inputs required are a food supply for the fish and topping up a bit of water.

Some studies have shown it uses 96% less water than traditional agriculture.

So I designed a system

I wrote some code and made some prototypes

Then it got serious!

I took over the spare bedroom!

The results weren’t too bad!

But my girlfriend wasn’t happy it taking over the spare bedroom

So I built a bigger system outside

And despite all this she still said yes!
